What does a wagering requirement calculate?
A casino wagering requirement—often called rollover or playthrough—describes how much qualifying betting volume must be recorded under an incentive's terms before certain bonus funds or related winnings become withdrawable. It is not the value of a promised prize, the amount of profit you should expect or a fixed fee that guarantees a cash-out. A calculator helps interpret contractual conditions and compare scenarios; it cannot predict whether a player will win or lose.
Formula 1: bonus-only playthrough
Where the terms explicitly apply the multiplier only to the bonus amount, the theoretical eligible wagering target is:
Eligible turnover target = Bonus amount × Wagering multiple.
If a hypothetical promotion grants a £20 bonus with a 5x requirement on bonus funds, the turnover target is £100 of qualifying bets. A person should not interpret this as “deposit £100 to withdraw £20” or as a requirement to risk more money to chase a loss. It describes how the illustrative contract counts eligible wagering volume.
Formula 2: deposit-plus-bonus playthrough
Some historical or jurisdiction-specific promotions apply the multiplier to a deposit plus bonus. Under those terms, the formula becomes:
Eligible turnover target = (Qualifying deposit + Bonus) × Multiple.
Illustration: a £50 qualifying deposit, £20 bonus and 5x multiple would produce (£50 + £20) × 5 = £350 of theoretical eligible turnover. That is much higher than the bonus-only £100 example. These are mathematical models, not a statement that such promotions are presently lawful in every market.
Why game contribution rates matter
Terms may count particular games at less than 100% of the amount wagered, or exclude them completely. In an illustrative system with a 20% contribution rate, £10 of nominal wagering in that game may count as only £2 toward the target. If a game is excluded, it contributes zero. The customer must consult the offer's actual product list, caps and definitions. A site should never state that spinning any game automatically progresses the rollover at the same speed.
A worked progress example
Suppose an eligible bonus-only target is £100 and the operator reports £35 of qualifying turnover. The remaining contractual volume is £65. That calculation says nothing about current balance, probability of reaching the target, or how much cash—if any—will be available afterward. A player may lose funds before meeting the stated target; a calculator does not recommend attempting to complete it.
Regional regulations may override the example
In Great Britain, UKGC rules effective 19 January 2026 limit qualifying bonus-fund wagering requirements to 10x under the specified incentives framework. Other regions use different rules or prohibit certain promotional practices. Spain's DGOJ has specific restrictions on participation in marketing promotions, including account-age and verification criteria described in its FAQ. Never reuse a general 30x or 40x comparison as a universal, current, legal offer.
What other conditions should a calculator disclose?
A responsible calculator separates the base amount, multiplier, whether deposit or bonus counts, applicable game contribution, any maximum stake or payout terms, expiry dates and the operator's actual jurisdiction. It should state assumptions beside results. If information is absent, the output is illustrative only; numerical precision cannot replace unknown contractual facts.
What is the safest practical use?
Use the result to understand the obligation *before* accepting a promotion—or to check whether a term has been explained fairly. It should not be used as a strategy for increasing betting volume. If the target appears excessive, contradictory or inapplicable to your location, seek clarification and consider not participating.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 10x bonus guarantee ten times the winnings? No. It refers to eligible wagering volume, not return.
Is the deposit always included in the formula? No. Read whether the offer uses bonus-only or deposit-plus-bonus wording.
Can excluded games count at 100%? No; the actual terms decide qualifying contribution.
Can BetVerity estimate withdrawal probability? This calculation explains conditions only. It cannot reliably predict betting results or guarantee a cash-out.
