Two UK gambling rule changes that should not be confused
In 2026, Great Britain's gambling regulator introduced or implemented important consumer-protection requirements affecting bonus wagering and deposit limits. They address different risks. The limit on wagering requirements controls how much qualifying play can be demanded before bonus funds become withdrawable. The gross deposit-limit requirements help customers cap money entering their gambling account over a specified period. Neither measure guarantees that playing with a bonus will be profitable or that no money can be lost.
The maximum 10x wagering requirement
From 19 January 2026, UKGC Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice social responsibility code 5.1.1 restricted incentives from imposing wagering requirements of more than 10 times bonus funds. It also restricts combining more than one category of gambling product—such as betting and casino—within a single incentive. This rule concerns the specified promotional mechanism, not an assertion that every prize, cash balance or bet has a universal 10x limit.
For illustration, a £20 qualifying bonus subject to a 10x playthrough requirement implies £200 of eligible wagering before the stated bonus wagering condition is met. That is wagering volume, not a promised return, not a £200 fee and not a suggestion to make those bets. Real eligibility and withdrawal also depend on the full applicable terms and rules.
What about free spins?
Free spins may form part of an incentive, and the operator must make conditions clear, including which games qualify, expiry dates, caps on any winnings and how any associated bonus funds are treated. Distinguish the nominal count of spins from their cash value and from any subsequent wagering requirement. Do not assume that “no deposit” means “no conditions.” An attractive headline cannot override the operator's lawful and fair terms.
What is a gross deposit limit?
The UKGC said that from 30 September 2026 operators must offer gross deposit limits to customers, use the label “deposit limit” for that type and give it at least equal prominence to other financial-limit tools. Gross means the deposits paid into an account over the chosen period, without netting out withdrawals. This differs from a net-deposit or net-loss calculation.
For example, if a customer deposits £50, withdraws £30, and deposits a further £50, gross deposits are £100, even though the net funds transferred are £70. If a gross deposit limit is £80 for the relevant period, the second deposit cannot simply be treated as £20 because a withdrawal occurred. This is an explanatory example, not an instruction for gambling.
Why the time window matters
A deposit limit can be configured over a defined period. Customers should inspect when a period starts, when it resets, and what the operator says about reducing or increasing a limit. A money-management tool is most useful when the displayed total and time basis are unambiguous. Promotional deadlines should not be treated as a reason to change an established spending boundary.
Are older bonus comparison articles accurate?
Articles listing 30x, 40x or higher playthrough for a UK-licensed operator may describe a pre-2026 offer, another jurisdiction or simply outdated terms. They should not be copied into current UK recommendations without checking the 2026 rule and exact product scope. Likewise, a bonus published for another market may not lawfully be offered in Great Britain.
What to check before accepting promotional terms
Read the bonus amount, eligible games or wagers, playthrough multiple, maximum stake or winnings limits where lawful, expiration, withdrawal restrictions, verification requirements and whether the promotion mixes incompatible product categories. Keep screenshots of the full offer and the effective date if there is a disagreement. If a term appears inconsistent with the regulator's rules, seek clarification from the operator and use the complaint process when appropriate.
FAQ
Does 10x mean £10 can never require more than £100 of all gambling activity? No. The rule has a defined scope for wagering requirements applied to incentives involving bonus funds.
Does a withdrawal cancel a gross deposit total? No. A gross deposit measure does not subtract withdrawals.
Are free spins automatically withdrawable as cash? No. Examine the specific lawful offer terms.
Are the UK rules global? No. They address licensed operations and relevant activity in Great Britain; another country may regulate bonuses differently.
