UK Casino Withdrawal Delays: KYC Requests, Complaints and ADR

A practical guide to understanding when a casino can request more documents, what evidence to keep and how UK gambling complaints progress.

Can a casino ask for extra ID when you withdraw?
Sometimes, but it is not an unlimited power. The UK Gambling Commission says gambling businesses must verify a customer’s age and identity before allowing them to gamble. Operators should not make withdrawal conditional on information they could reasonably have requested earlier. Additional documents may nevertheless be needed at a later stage to fulfil legal duties, including some anti-money-laundering requirements. Whether a delay is justified depends on the timing, the purpose of the request and what the operator already knew.

The distinction between routine verification and a new legal concern
Routine proof of age and identity belongs at the appropriate onboarding stage. A later request may be defensible if a new risk arises, the payment destination changes, unusual activity is identified, or the firm must satisfy a legal obligation. It is harder to justify repeatedly demanding documents merely because a customer tries to withdraw. Ask the company to identify what is missing, why it is required now, which secure channel to use and how the information affects the withdrawal timeline.

Why 'KYC completed' on a dashboard may not settle the issue
The customer may have completed basic identity checks without satisfying every later payment, address or source-of-funds check. Conversely, a label such as “under review” does not establish that a new request is necessary. Good complaints focus on a dated timeline: when the account was verified, when the money was deposited, when the withdrawal was requested, what documents were asked for, and how long the operator waited to request them.

Assemble a withdrawal evidence file
Include the brand and legal operator, account reference, payment and withdrawal methods, date and amount of the withdrawal, balance statements, verification status at the time, screenshots of relevant terms and all written support interactions. Keep evidence in original format where possible. Avoid publishing account numbers or identity documents on social media. If files are uploaded, use only an authenticated website or secure channel confirmed by the operator.

How to make a formal complaint
First, use the gambling business’s complaints procedure—not only a general live-chat message. Clearly mark your submission as a complaint. Identify the amount, dates and exact remedy requested, such as release of an eligible withdrawal or a written explanation of the outstanding verification requirement. Ask for a case or complaint reference and preserve the acknowledgement.

Under UKGC guidance, the full complaints process should take no longer than eight weeks from receipt. Businesses are encouraged to acknowledge receipt promptly; Commission guidance describes three working days as a standard for many operators.

What happens after eight weeks?
If the business cannot resolve the complaint, or both parties reach a final deadlock earlier, qualifying disputes may proceed to an independent Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) provider. ADR is generally free to the consumer. A gambling business should identify the relevant ADR body, and may issue a deadlock letter documenting that its internal process has concluded. ADR normally requires you to have used the operator’s own procedure first.

The Gambling Commission is the regulator, not a substitute for an ADR adjudicator deciding every individual transaction dispute.

What if the operator closes or loses its licence?
The standard complaints process may be affected by a company’s cessation or insolvency. Check its current legal status and any official administrator contact details before submitting money claims. The protection rating for customer funds matters independently from whether an operator once held a UKGC licence.

FAQ
Can I refuse all identity checks at withdrawal? A blanket refusal may prevent the business from satisfying a legitimate legal requirement. Ask for the specific basis and a secure submission method.

Does eight weeks mean payment is guaranteed on day 56? No. It is a complaint-handling limit, not a universal withdrawal settlement guarantee.

Should I send documents through a Telegram agent? Use authenticated official channels; never send passwords or one-time codes.

Does UKGC itself return my money? It usually does not decide individual gambling-payment complaints; ADR or other avenues may be relevant.
